Message from the MLA
Hello Residents of Evanston!
We, in the Calgary-Mackay Office, hope that the first few weeks of 2012 have been productive for you and that you have a great path set out before you for the upcoming year. It should be a busy one, both in Calgary and throughout Alberta.
I hope all Calgarians, particularly those in Calgary-Mackay, participate in the Calgary as Canada’s Cultural Capital 2012 festivities over the coming months. There is surely something for every cultural appetite during these 12 months of celebration and cultural diversity. I hope to attend at least some of these events and to see you out there as well.
This year also marks the centennial Calgary Stampede, which pleases me a great deal. We are also in the preliminary stages of planning the annual Stampede Breakfast for the constituency and hope you will keep your eyes open to this column for information. It will be bigger and better than ever.
With the Legislature returning for its Winter Session on February 7th, there is much to do. Back from a restful holiday season, I am prepared to examine new pieces of legislation and debate new motions that will better Calgary-Mackay and all Albertans. I hope you will feel free to submit any questions or ideas to my office so that I might consider them when given time to speak in the Legislature.
The Minister of Human Services, Dave Hancock, recently announced that I will serve as Chair of the Youth Secretariat. The Youth Secretariat is focused on:
- ensuring the youth voice is reflected in the work of the Alberta government;
- increasing the number of opportunities youth have to contribute to social policy;
- supporting Alberta’s children and youth to reach their potential;
- listening, understanding and responding to young people’s needs; and
- promoting promising practices in youth engagement.
Please feel free to come to me with any issues or concerns that you may have. This includes youth who may want to have their voices heard, even if they are not yet eligible to vote. In my capacity as Chair, I will advocate to ensure that all Albertans, regardless of age, have a voice in Edmonton.
The Calgary-Mackay constituency office is committed to supporting these and other initiatives that improve the quality of life for people in our community. For more information, please subscribe to my e-newsletter by visiting http://teresawoopaw.ca

Hello Neighbours!
The winter season is upon us, and we want to let you know what construction activity and surface maintenance plans are in place this winter.
Qualico’s Snow Clearing Policy:
Qualico commits to clearing the roads and pathways in your neighbourhood according to the attached map. This map indicates roads and parks that are still the responsibility of Qualico, and those that fall to the City of Calgary for maintenance. Qualico will clean snow from all major routes first, and then all construction sites. We will do our best to clear snow as soon as possible after a heavy snow fall. For roads that the City will be clearing, you may refer to the City of Calgary website at www.calgary.ca/transportation/roads/road-maintenance/snow-and-ice-control.
Phase 10 Storm Pond:
New signs have recently been installed, reminding residents to kindly clean up after their pets. Let us know what you think!
Also, the MR area of this storm pond has now received Final Acceptance Certification (FAC) from the City. What this means is that any future maintenance of this park space is the responsibility of the City. You may call 3-1-1 to report any maintenance concerns you have.
Phase 11 Storm Pond:
This area has also received FAC and you may now call the City at 3-1-1 for any future maintenance concerns.
Secondary Access in/out of Evanston:
Now Open for local traffic: A temporary recycled-concrete road has been constructed on the Evanston Hill road alignment which connects to 144th Avenue. This is now open for local traffic as a secondary access road in and out of Evanston. This was constructed as part of the Evanston Phase 19 Engineering submission.
Erosion Control: What you can do to help protect our water?
Qualico Communities (QC): An Erosion and Sediment Control Plan is a regulatory responsibility of QC in any developing area, serving to protect the integrity of our water. Part of this plan includes a stormwater collection and conveyance system that feeds into a stormpond facility. Other components include silt fencing, catch basin inlet protection, trapped lows, ditching, earth berming and regular street cleaning. These measures help ensure our receiving streams remain clean and healthy.
Homeowners: Once construction is complete and new homeowners take possession of their homes, the responsibility and obligation to maintain the lots in a safe and aesthetically pleasing state transfers to the new homeowners. Homeowners are required to ensure that soil does not erode from their lots and must take the same care and caution as the builders. Provided that builders have backfilled, compacted, and graded the lots correctly, the homeowners should be encouraged to sod or seed their yards as soon as possible to prevent topsoil from eroding onto the streets and entering the storm sewer system.
For more information on Erosion Control and Stormwater Collection visit The City of Calgary/Water Resources or call 3-1-1.
